Collingwood, a short 3km north east of the CBD, boasts a proudly chequered past. Originally settled from gold rush riches, this rectangular suburb was built around factories, with workers cottages along narrow streets, and public houses to quench a hard earned thirst. In fact, outside of Melbourne, Collingwood was Victoria’s biggest brewing centre, home to The Fosters Brewery and Wellington Street’s Yorkshire Brewery; its brick brewing tower once Melbourne’s tallest building and now a landmark residential apartment complex.
Along with several waves of post-war migration, Collingwood has long attracted artists, musicians, designers and bohemians, establishing itself as a decidedly anti-establishment area. It has remained determinedly eclectic, featuring a mix of designer stores, factory outlets, vintage, ethnic, indie and discount shops, bookstores, quirky galleries and vivid street art. Main thoroughfare, Smith Street, retains a number of the grand nineteenth century buildings that saw it rival Chapel street for shopping emporiums and department stores at the turn of the last century.
Populated by a mix of people, Collingwood is nevertheless dominated by young singles, professionals and older couples who are often attracted to the undeniably green sensibility abounding. Bikes and public transport rule in a growing culture of recycling, repurposing and reducing carbon footprints, with people living in a mix of renovated Victorian workers cottages, double storey terraces, converted factories and brand spanking new development complexes.
St Josephs Primary, Collingwood Alternative School and the internationally accredited Collingwood College Prep-12, attract both local families and students from neighbouring zones in an area very well serviced by trams, Hoddle street buses and the Abbotsford railway station.
Old and new bars, trendy cafes, fabulous restaurants and diverse take-aways feed the locals and keep outliers popping back to see what’s new in this dynamic suburb. The MRE property professionals will help find your next home in this true original, Collingwood, once a rough and ready place and now a highly desirable suburb, faithfully mixing the past and present.
