About Collingwood

Collingwood, a short 3km north east of the CBD, boasts a proudly chequered past. Originally settled from gold rush riches, this rectangular suburb was built around factories, with workers cottages along narrow streets, and public houses to quench a hard earned thirst. In fact, outside of Melbourne, Collingwood was Victoria’s biggest brewing centre,home to The Fosters Brewery and Wellington Street’s Yorkshire Brewery;  its brick brewing tower once Melbourne’s tallest building and now a landmark residential apartment complex.

Along with several waves of post-war migration, Collingwood has long attracted artists, musicians, designers and bohemians, establishing itself as a decidedly anti-establishment area. It has remained determinedly eclectic, featuring a mix of designer stores, factory outlets, vintage, ethnic, indie and discount shops, bookstores, quirky galleries and vivid street art. Main thoroughfare, Smith Street, retains a number of the grand nineteenth century buildings that saw it rival Chapel street for shopping emporiums and department stores at the turn of the last century.
