About St Kilda
Life in St Kilda is definitely never dull. Located 6 km south east of the CBD, this busy suburb is home to people from all walks of life, with it’s beach vibe, parks and vibrant arts scene attracting backpackers and tourists, along with established families, singles and professionals.
St Kilda began as an unabashedly elite suburb that saw the construction of many boom style stone mansions and palatial hotels along its hilly areas and waterfront. Decades of changing fortunes have seen it cater to a multitude of varying demographics, reflected no better than in its many different architectural styles – from rows of Victorian terraces, semi-detached cottages, interwar Californian Bungalows and Spanish Mission homes, to modernist apartments, strata titled units and flats, right through to today’s state-of-the-art contemporary apartment developments.
Long regarded for its bohemian culture, St Kilda has traditionally been home to many artists, musicians and writers, with annual events such as the St Kilda Festival, Pride March and St Kilda Film and Writers Festivals garnering huge participation and support. The three landmark buildings – National Theatre for performing arts, Palais Theatre for live music and concerts, and the Art Deco Astor Cinema, encapsulate the area’s artistic pretensions.
St Kilda’s palm tree lined Esplanade has long been synonymous with leisure activities and fun, from iconic Luna Park, to the historic beach side Sea Baths health and fitness facilities, bars, restaurants and day-spa. Apart from sunbathing and paddling in the shallows, beach lovers enjoy wind and kite surfing, sailing, paddle boarding and jet skiing, with foreshore rollerbladers getting some speed up too.
Fitzroy and Acland Street provide two separate retail precincts linked by the palm-tree lined Esplanade and beach. Fitzroy street is the buzzier area, with cafes, restaurants, boutique retail complexes and a supermarket by day, along with bright lights, nightlife and bars by night. Acland street, is the more cosmopolitan strip, with its delectable European cake shops, multi-cultural restaurants, cafes and eclectic clothing stores, quirky giftware, op shops and edgy designer fashion boutiques. The St Kilda Arts & Crafts Market also operates every Sunday along the Esplanade,
Four primary schools and two secondary colleges across St Kilda and St Kilda East, superb public transport access including tram, train and a light rail direct to the CBD make this lively suburb a popular choice and the MRE property team can’t wait to show you.
